Oilseeds & Edible Oil Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Russia lifts curb on Indian sesame seeds, groundnut Exports must carry quality and safety certification. Each consignment need to carry a phytosanitary certificate. Export of sesame seeds must not be from GMO sources. Mohan Padmanabhan Kolkata, Sept. 19 The Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (FSVPS) of the Russian Federation has lifted the temporary restrictions imposed on sesame seeds and groundnut exports from India to Russia for a period of four months, following assurances on quality inspection given by the Indian side. This comes into effect from September 17. Informed trade sources told Business Line here today that the temporary curb on exports from India to Russia, slapped some months ago, had been lifted with the condition that sesame seeds and groundnuts exported should carry the quality and safety certification issued by the Delhi-based Sri Ram Institute for Industrial Research, or any other agency as may be notified from time to time. It is learnt that apart from this, each consignment should carry a phytosanitary certificate. The certification would test for pesticide residues and give a report on the residue analysis. The Indian side, during the stipulated four months, will send to the Russian authorities information on pesticides used during growing and storage and date of last treatment which should be approved by a competent authority. It is further clarified that sesame seeds that will be exported to the Russian Federation will not be from Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) sources. Fresh curbsSources said fresh restrictions on export of these commodities from India could be imposed from January 15, 2008 in case of failure to comply with the quality requirements and assurances. A Russian delegation is expected to visit India shortly to sign the final protocol on mutually accepted quality parameters for sesame seeds exports to Russia. According to Mr Pradeep Kr Shaw, Chairman of Shellac and Forest Products Export Promotion Council, the designated EPC for sesame seeds, a meeting of member exporters and representatives of the Export Inspection Council of the Government of India and Sri Ram Institute for Industrial Research has been called on September 25, in Mumbai to discuss the measures that need to be taken to ensure testing and quality certification of sesame seeds for exports to Russia. One round of discussions has already been held in Delhi on September 17. More Stories on : Oilseeds & Edible Oil | Exports & Imports | Standards & Benchmarks
