Mining & Quarrying States - Other States
Our Bureau Kolkata, Sept. 19 The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has asked the Jharkhand Government to allot mining lease for one billion tonnes of the Chiria iron ore mine reserves to SAIL immediately, according to Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Steel, Fertilisers and Petrochemicals. Speaking to newspersons today, Mr Paswan said that the Jharkhand Government should also allot in the near future mining lease for another one billion tonnes of iron ore at Chiria to SAIL to enable the public sector steel major meet its raw material requirements post-expansion. In lieu of such mining leases, SAIL would be willing to put up steel making capacities in the State, he added. The Chiria mine has the second-largest high-grade iron ore deposits in the world. Subsequent Governments in Jharkhand have dangled the Chiria reserves before steel companies with a view to attracting big-ticket investments. With regard to the chemical hub proposed to be set up at the island of Nayachar near Haldia, Mr Paswan said that to qualify for PCPIR status, the area should have a minimum contiguous area of 250 sq km. On a standalone basis, Nayachar may not have such a large contiguous area. However, if it is connected to Haldia by a bridge, than Nayachar could qualify for PCPIR status, he said. Mr Paswan also announced wage revision for employees of Metal Scrap Trade Corporation (MSTC). He said that the wages of MSTC employees would be brought on par with those of their SAIL counterparts.
