Centre urged to extend jute packaging Act timeframe
Our Bureau
Kolkata, Sept. 19 The President of the Gunny Trades Association, Mr Hrishikesh Shroff, has urged the Centre to discontinue with the practice of reviewing and extending the Jute Goods Packaging Material (Compulsory use in Packaging Commodities) Act (JPMA) on a yearly basis. Instead, it would auger well for the jute industry if the extension is granted for a period of 5-10 years.
Speaking at the trade body’s 82nd annual general meeting held here today, Mr Shroff said the overall demand for jute bags was determined by the implementation of the JPMA. With the Government permitting fertilisers and cement – and even sugar and foodgrains for some time – to be packed in synthetic bags, the industry had been impacted adversely.
The recent Government decision to continue with the reservation of 100 per cent packaging of foodgrains and sugar in jute bags had come as a relief to the industry and would go a long way in achieving the targets set in the National Jute Policy 2005.
He said the indefinite strike in the jute mills sector from January 5, to March 8, had caused irreparable damage to jute mills and the trade. Suspension of production in jute mills provided a shot in the arm to the synthetic packaging sector resulting in dilution of jute packaging norms.
