Human Resources Variety - Lifestyle Temping yet to bring lifestyle changes
Anjali Prayag Bangalore, Sept. 20 If you thought temp jobs (short-duration jobs for specific projects) are bringing in a lifestyle change in corporate India, here’s a surprise. Unlike in the US, where temp jobs offer a lifestyle choice for all levels of employees, it is hardly the case in India. In fact, less than three per cent of the jobs that fall in the temping bracket belong to the mid-to-senior positions. Currently, there are about three lakh temp jobs in the country and less than 5,000 jobs are available as a lifestyle choice for employees with 8-10 years’ experience with a CTC (cost to company) of Rs 8-10 lakh. And about 20 per cent of the temp jobs belong to the Rs 3-8 lakh category. About 80 per cent of the jobs fall in the sub-Rs 20,000 per month salary category and don’t offer too many flexi factors like working hours and days. Mr Pravin Chand Tatavarti, Managing Director, Allegis Service India, a staffing and recruitment firm, says: “India is about three years away from achieving what US has done in terms of offering flexible employment to its people.” According to him, the labour force is only now getting mature and there will be a market for flexible lifestyle employment only after a couple of years. According to him, one of the drivers behind this trend is the return of the expat Indian to work here. Most temp jobs that are available at senior positions are offered to women returning to work after maternity leave, retired Defence and Government officers and a few expats who demand flexible lifestyles because of the skills they bring to the table. “There are very few cases of senior-level managers consciously making flexi working a lifestyle choice,” says Mr Rajesh A.R., Vice-President, Temporary Staffing Unit, TeamLease India, the country’s largest temping firm. And most of the temp jobs that are available at the senior level are in the IT/ITeS sectors and a few in the construction industry, he adds. An interesting phenomenon that the country is witnessing is the ‘temp-to-perm’ conversion offers that companies make. “These offers are made even at the mid-management level and in 50 per cent of the cases, you can be sure that the candidates accept them,” says Mr Rajesh. In terms of employment, it would take at least another five years for India Inc to offer its employees a flexible lifestyle choice, he adds. More Stories on : Human Resources | Lifestyle
