‘Use census data for financial inclusion’

Economist tells bankers

Our Bureau

Mangalore, Sept. 20

The wealth of data available in the census report should be used for the effective implementation of financial inclusion programme in the country, according to Dr N.K. Thingalaya, noted economist.

Delivering the keynote address at ‘Manasa Manthana-2007’ — a State-level paper presentation competition, organised by the Aloysius Institute of Business Administration — here on Thursday, he said that bankers should give attention for making use of the data available in the Census report of 2001.

Stating that various villages are devoid of banking facilities, Dr Thingalaya said the village-level household data in the Census report should help them in the implementation of the financial inclusion programme. It could be an effective tool in the implementation of the programme.

IT impact

Speaking on the theme of the contest — Business in digital era — he highlighted how information technology (IT) has made an impact on agriculture, industrial and tertiary sectors of the economy.

Citing the example of ITC’s e-choupal initiative, he said this is an effort to make use of IT in farm management. Such an initiative has helped all concerned in that area. Dr Thingalaya said that IT has helped in a big way for the growth of SME sector.

On the use of IT in tertiary sectors, Dr Thingalaya said this is replacing some sections of working class in society. Giving example for this, he said online booking of tickets may lead to the gradual elimination of travel agents in society.
