Training on insect-free food storage at TNAU

Coimbatore, Sept 21 A 10-day training on post-harvest entomological techniques for insect-free food grain storage was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here.
Scientists involved in entomological research across the country are participating in the training, sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Delhi.
Inaugurating the programme, the TNAU Vice Chancellor, Dr C. Ramaswamy, said that of the annual storage loss of food grains estimated at Rs 7,000 crore in the country, the loss caused by insects alone worked out about Rs 1,300 crore. Calling upon the farm entomologists to widen the perspective of food grain loss prevention in the backdrop of the country’s food security endeavours, the Vice Chancellor said the storage pest control mechanisms should be integrated. Along with the physical, mechanical, methods of pest control, biotechnology could also be applied to achieve pest resistance character for the stored food products, he said.
