Biocon to widen oral insulin trials

Bangalore, Sept. 21

Biocon Ltd has said it presented the results of phase 1 studies on its oral insulin product, IN-105, at the European Association for Study of Diabetes meeting held in Amsterdam on Friday. Phase 1 studies were conducted on healthy volunteers who have been administered IN-105 in the form of a tablet. Based on these promising results, Biocon intends to now develop this molecule through further clinical trials, a company statement here said. IN-105 is Biocon’s novel proprietary analog of insulin and is feasible for delivery as tablet at room temperature. Biocon’s CMD, Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, said: “This is an encouraging step towards our efforts of bringing an oral insulin to diabetic patients across the world. IN-105 promises to be a significant value differentiator in Biocon’s quest for global leadership in the insulin segment.” Biocon has conducted all the development for this molecule at its facilities in Bangalore. It recently got approval from the Swedish medical authorities to carry out phase 1 human clamp studies for the molecule in Sweden- the first clinical trial outside India for the molecule. —
