Our Bureau

Ahmedabad, Sept. 22Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd (TKM) has launched a programme to groom industry-ready technicians, at an ITI here. It proposes to spread it to 20 ITIs across India by 2010 with an investment of Rs 6 crore.

The move is expected to expose students to the latest in automotive technology. An on-the-job, six-month training at Toyota dealerships will be part of curricula and the ITIs will gain Toyota training system and material, TKM Managing Director, Mr A. Toyoshima, told reporters.

Mr Gurucharan Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Labour andEmplyment), Gujarat Government, was also present.

Sharpening skills

This special training module, called Toyota Technical Educational Program (T-TEP), aims at enhancing the skill sets and employability of the students. Nearly 2,000 students are expected to be benefited through the programme.

The technical manpower available in India suffer from low certification rates and they are not trained for repair and diagnostics, he said. T-TEP hopes to bridge these gaps by partnering with ITIs and jointly working with its dealers over the next four years.

The T-TEP curriculum has been synchronised with the ITIs’ syllabi in the second year of the course. TKM will partner the institutes by training their instructors with the latest technology used at Toyota.

Its programme will expose students to the cutting-edge technology used in the automotive industry. Globally, Toyota has introduced this programme in 436 institutes across 52 countries, including the US, Australia, Italy, South Africa, China, Vietnam, and India.

TKM is a joint venture between Toyota Motor Corporation and the Kirloskar Group.
