TCS expands into ‘emerging services’

V. Rishi Kumar

Hyderabad, Sept. 23

As services major Tata Consultancy Services continues to expand globally with footprint in new geographies, some of the innovations made by their R&D teams are set to make a bigger impact touching different sectors.

These include bioinformatics and digital certification, RFID (radio frequency identification) and automation of software coding. Interestingly, some of these innovations were attempted by R&D team as and when need arose, later ending in distinct products.

The General Manager of TCS and Head of Hyderabad operations, Mr V. Rajanna, said that the company was investing in expanding into emerging services areas spanning infrastructure management, software testing and acceleration of software delivery.

Mr Rajanna (who started TCS’ China operations) told Business Line that two R&D centres in Hyderabad addressing areas of bioinformatics and security and Systems Engineering and Cybernetics Centres are engaged in projects that complement TCS’s global services delivery and also develop products for other markets.

Pilot project

Citing the case of a RFID chip-driven degree certificate, Mr Rajanna said that this incorporates score card, marks, fingerprint and digital signature making it tamper-proof.

What has been developed as a pilot project has the potential to be replicated in other educational institutions and universities.

Referring to software coding, Mr Rajanna said that this project started as TCS was confronted with a problem relating to language translation. However, as it turned out, this showed capability to handle many software coding issues and has the potential to ensure non-linear growth, improving productivity.

Disaster recovery

Hyderabad has been identified as an important centre for disaster recovery (DR) as it is a proven base against seismic threats. Therefore, companies are increasingly looking at exploiting the potential for setting up DR sites here. This fits into the company’s overall strategy to expand services in the infrastructure management setting up data centres.

SYNERGY PARK, SEZ

The Hyderabad operations have grown phenomenally over the last three decades and it now employs over 5,500 people, located across two fully owned campuses and two leased premises. The company recently commissioned the phase one of the Synergy Park which has the capacity to host around 8,000 people when completed.

Following the recent approval for TCS Special Economic Zone (SEZ), the company had indicated that this will be developed in a phased manner with a capacity to host 15,000 by 2013.

The Hyderabad centre fits perfectly into the corporate Global Services Delivery Model (GSDM) that complements the near shore and regional services centres. Traditionally, the services areas include telecom, healthcare, hi-tech and Government. Areas of engineering and industrial services and insurance are being further consolidated.
