Rising demand for air-freight

The figures released by International Airport Transport Association (IATA) suggest a steady rise in the demand for air-freight. In July the growth was 5.5 per cent as compared to 4.9 per cent in June. The first-half growth in 2007 was 2.7 per cent and 3.8 per cent, year to date. Leading the demand growth were West Asian carriers, with 11.1 per cent growth, while the airlines of Asia Pacific boosted pushed up the global totals with above average freight growth of 8.2 per cent in July, reflecting strong economic growth in the region. Europe witnessed a growth of 4.8 per cent while Latin America continued to sag with a 5.3 per cent fall, year-on-year. However, the good news is tinged with caution. In the opinion of IATA CEO, airlines may have to pursue a prudent approach in regard to their capacity expansion plans if volatility of the global stock markets persists because the spin-offs could drag demand, affecting the world economy.
