New energy efficiency norms for pump industry soon

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Sept. 23

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is likely to unveil improved energy efficiency norms for the electric motor and pump industry next month. It may put energy efficiency standards higher than the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms for the pump industry.

It would be introduced by by the Director-General of the BEE, Mr Ajay Mathur, during his visit here in the first week of next month, according to Mr Krishna Kumar, President of the Indian Pump Manufacturers Association (IPMA), the national apex body.

Talking to presspersons here soon after a joint committee meeting of the IPMA and the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers Association (SIEMA), an affiliated body of the state’s pump manufacturers, Mr Krishna Kumar said the new energy efficiency norms came in the backdrop of the Union Government’s thrust on energy conservation which would also seek to emphasis on quality among the pump manufacturers across the country.

Mr Krishna Kumar who was elected the new IPMA President at the meeting, said the IPMA-SIEMA joint meeting discussed among others the quality and product upgrade to achieve higher value realisation by the southern pump manufacturers for which the IPMA would jointly work with the SIEMA.

Unlike pump manufacturing clusters in Pune, Mumbai and Ahmedabad, the Coimbatore pump industry is predominantly focussed on agriculture and domestic pumps. The meeting felt the need for the region’s pump industry to diversify its range to cover high end industrial pumps used by sectors such as chemicals or solid handling.

Heavy dependence on domestic and agriculture sectors has, apart from narrowing down the market avenues, been causing price squeeze on their products for the southern pump manufacturers.

To achieve a larger and diversified market, the Coimbatore pump industry should receive support in the areas of raw material quality, production processing, design and quality control. The IPMA-SIEMA joint working, according to Mr Krishna Kumar, will give the needed exposure to the local pump industry here towards bridging the gaps in efficient networking of quality production.
