Hyderabad, Sept. 24
The Jawahar Pharma City, Visakhapatnam, is all set to witness hectic activity as many units are ready to begin operations soon.
“About 55 units are ready to commence production while another 35 units will be ready in next six months,” Ms J. Geeta Reddy, Minister for Industries and Tourism, told the delegates at a meet on globalisation of pharma industry organised by Bulk Drug Manufacturers’ Association (India) here on Monday.
Out of 2,200 acres of land in Pharma City, 45 members of BDMA were given 475 acres, she said.
The State Government would look into issues raised by the association, including ban on setting up of or expansion of bulk drug manufacturing units in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar districts and the high cost of setting up effluent treatment plants by the SMEs.
‘Emerging as hub’
Citing reports of the World Bank and Reserve Bank of India, the Minister said Andhra Pradesh was emerging as a hub of biotechnology and chemical industry.
“Indian pharma industry is growing at 22 per cent every year due to increased opportunities in contract manufacturing ($2 billion by 2010) and global clinical trials ($1.23 billion by 2010),” she pointed out.
