Management Variety - Cinema Chak De India as management training tool
New mantra: Students at Lala Lajpat Rai Institute of Management at the presentation. Our Bureau Mumbai, Sept. 24 ‘Chak De’- Go for it! seems to be the new mantra for management schools. In the film, Kabir Khan, the coach resolves the ego clash between Preeti Sabharwal and Komal Choutala and the team goes on to win the hockey world cup. Students at the Lala Lajpat Rai Institute of Management are convinced that that is as good a management case study on inter-personal conflicts as any that the dons at the Harvard Business School can come up with. Learning made effective“To make learning more effective, we should evolve new ways of teaching. Chak De is a very stimulating film of our times and can be used efficiently to convey the principles of management studies,” said Professor H.S. Cheema. Students of the institute undertook scene-by-scene analysis of the film and exemplified each move formulated by Shah Rukh Khan’s character Kabir in the game of hockey for specific business strategies, according to Manan Kashyap, a first year student of Management Studies, who participated in the presentation of the concept. Inspiring concept“As a student I found it interesting and an inspiring concept to compare the strategies in the film with real life business,” he said. Sequences in the movie were analysed on the basis of nearly 20 concepts in human resource development and marketing. Leadership, motivation, performance mapping and SWOT analysis among other things were used as starting points for discussing various events in the movie. “You can connect to the onscreen characters and retain the information more easily as compared to learning management theory from books,” added Rekha Mankotia Kanwar, a student. Besides, if a CEO is equated to Shah Rukh Khan and made to think that winning is everything, he is bound to feel motivated and pursue his goal with passion, she said. “Students of the college have been instrumental in taking this initiative forward and taking the idea to many corporates. They have been receptive and encouraged our students to come up with more such concepts to help them analyse their business strategies more easily,” said Professor Cheema. Businesses have already seen value in the storylines of Lagaan and Rang de Basanti in the recent past. Script writers ought to fancy their chances as academics in management institutes.
