G.I. status: A women engaged in winding coir yarn at a manufacturing unit in Alappuzha, Kerala. Alappuzha has been granted an unique Geographical Indication ( GI ) status for its coir industry, under Geographical Indications Act, 1999 by the Union Commerce Ministry. The uniqueness is derived from the exclusive weaving techniques and processes, drawing on traditional skills and craftsmanship. The production method involves several stages like storing, dyeing, winding, wrapping and beaming, weaving, finishing and bundling. –
