Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 25 The State-owned Kerala Agro Industries Corporation has launched a project for manufacture of value-added products from coconut.

The project, being implemented with financial assistance from the Coconut Development Board of the Union Government, envisages production of tender coconut chips and coconut vinegar in the first phase.

It also aims at dissemination of the technology to women’s self-help groups and promotion of production units with the aid of the Coconut Development Board.

The products will be manufactured at the Corporation’s Agro Research Centre in Thrissur district. A facility for imparting training in the technology has also been set up at the centre.

Health snack

According to the officials of the corporation, the fibre-rich chips manufactured from tender coconuts without using oil can be used as a ‘health snack’.

Coconut vinegar, which can be a good alternative to synthetic vinegar, will be produced from the coconut water left after the manufacture of the chips. The officials said that the corporation was in the process of formulating new projects to produce more value-added products from coconut as also from other agriculture crops.
