Phoenix to probe Martian soil for ice

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Sept. 26

With the controversy about the existence of water on Mars still to be settled convincingly, the question, whether the Martian soil has ice, is all set to be probed by Phoenix, the US space craft that is on its way now.

Launched in August, Phoenix, expected to land on the Red Planet in May 2008, will scoop samples of the Martian soil and analyse whether it contains ice.

Giving insights into the events encountered by the two rovers — Opportunity and Spirit exploring Mars, Mr James E. Graf, Deputy Director, Earth Science and Technology, Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA, said: “NASA will launch Mars Science Laboratory, which would be a rover of the size of a small automobile in 2009 and it would land the next year.”

‘Some sort of liquid’

Asked about the existence of water on Mars, he said that scientists believe that they have evidence that there was water on the surface of Mars at one point of time. The gullies suggest some sort of liquid flow. However, what that liquid is we still do not know, he said.

Making a graphic presentation on Dust Storm and Mars at the ongoing 58th International Astronautical Congress here on Tuesday, Mr Graf said the two rovers successfully weathered the storm for 6 weeks during June 2007 and all its scientific instruments on board were back in action.
