Science & Technology Variety - Awards & Honours States - Kerala Bhatnagar Prize for NIST scientist Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 26 The National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIST), Thiruvananthapuram (formerly RRL-Thiruvananthapuram), has claimed the second Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize in as many years. Dr A. Ajayaghosh, a scientist of the photosciences and photonics group, has been chosen for this year’s prize. Dr K. George Thomas of the institute had won the award last year. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prizes are awarded annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in biological, chemical, earth, atmosphere, ocean, planetary, engineering, mathematical, medical and physical sciences. The prize is awarded on the basis of contributions made through work done primarily in India during the preceding five years. It comprises a citation, a plaque and a cash award of Rs 2 lakh. Dr Ajayaghosh is a native of Kollam district. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Sree Narayana College, Kollam. After obtaining M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Calicut University, he joined the then RRL as a scientist and is now a senior scientist at NIST.
