Santanu Sanyal Kolkata, Sept.27 From October, CMA Rail, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CMA CGM which is France’s number one and the world’s third largest container shipping line, will become the holding company of CMA CGM’s worldwide rail operations, also covering India, according to company sources. The other countries include Europe, China and North America. CMA CGM, reports have it, is in discussion with India’s Adani Logistics for acquiring 26 per cent stake in the Indian company. The Adani Group, the promoter of Adani Logistics, is to invest over Rs 300 crore on acquisition of container trains and the first rake has already arrived at Tughlakabad inland container depot (ICD) near Delhi for maiden run to Mundra port, it is learnt. Adani Group is to invest another Rs 900 crore or so for setting up rail-linked ICDs at 10 locations across the country. The ICDs will be launched by Inland Conware Private Ltd, another company under the group. Negotiations with MoroccoThe other country with which CMA CGM is currently negotiating is Morocco, the purpose being to sign an agreement with the Moroccan railway system for participating in the country’s freight movement by rail. In China, it has already signed an agreement with Chinese rail freight subsidiary and in Algeria with the country’s national transport company. “CMA CGM’s decision to launch CMA Rail highlights its role also as a global provider of railway services to its maritime customers”, observe the sources. The Rail Link Europe subsidiary reaches 20 destinations throughput Europe, offering direct train services several times a week between Europe’s main ports and major markets like Marseilles, Le Havre, Paris, Lyon, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Zeebrugge and Ludwigshafen/Manheim. The French shipping company’s presence in rail freight sector is on the growth track with the launch of three new private rail shuttles on the following routes: Dourges/Zeebrugge (three rotations per week), Lyons/Fos (three rotations per week) and Le Havre/Bonneuil (two rotations per week), the sources add.
