Wage revision: Planters’ body in talks with unions

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Sept. 27 The Planters’ Association of Tamil Nadu (PAT) has initiated direct negotiations with plantation trade unions across the State on wage revision for the ensuing three-year period commencing January 2008.

Briefing presspersons, Mr T. Jayaram, Chairman, PAT, said the association has indicated to the unions that the proposed industry-wide settlement should be linked to productivity and also address the problem of absenteeism in plantations.

The problem of absenteeism appears to have shot up from 6 per cent seven years ago to over 25 per cent at present.

PAT has also apprised about the unfavourable financial climate and sought the unions’ co-operation for reaching an amicable settlement.

The next round of talks is slated for October 20.
