TEDA moots creation of ‘solar cities’

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Sept. 27 The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) is proposing the creation of ‘solar cities’ across the country for implementation under the 11th five-year plan.

It will soon submit a proposal to the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, according to Deputy General Manager, Mr S.M. Vijayakumar.

The proposal seeks to meet the power needs of a remote area of a city through solar energy by declaring the same as a solar city.

Cost estimates

The estimated cost of each solar city would be Rs 50 lakh for generation of 20 KW for street lights and public utilities.Under the proposal, the solar city would switch from solar equipment to solar battery when solar radiation is low.

In Tamil Nadu, the proposal would cover 20 districts, including Tiruchi, Coimbatore and Madurai.

Spot selection

The selection of the spots would be decided in consultation with the district administration.

The aim is to reduce the dependence on conventional means for power generation.

A decision would be made after receiving the proposals from all the States and on the availability of financial resources, he added.
