Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather Monsoon set to withdraw
Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 27 Monsoon withdrawal will now assume to take centre stage of the sub-continental weather what with the two reigning monsoon systems over east India and the west coast becoming less marked on Thursday. Early signals are that the upper air cyclonic circulation over west-central Bay of Bengal expected to take shape by the month-end might fail to go the distance and could offer only token resistance to the anti-cyclone (dry air) drifting in from the northwest border. An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said the latest meteorological analysis suggested that the southwest monsoon was likely to withdraw from parts of Rajasthan and northwest India during the next three days. The almost three-week lag in getting the withdrawal process started (September 1 onwards as per normal schedule) from west Rajasthan will have been cut down to almost half thanks to rain-bearing systems in the neighbourhood withering away sooner than expected. The overall lag would now be limited to around 10 days, judging from the outlook that the Pune-central India-Lucknow alignment would get covered by October 11 (October 1 as per normal schedule). The anti-cyclone forces the phased withdrawal of monsoon initially along a south-to-northeast direction and then south-to-southwest and later southwest. IMDsaid an upper air cyclonic circulation, a remnant of the previous day’s system, lay over north Orissa and adjoining areas of Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand. BEYOND REACH It is likely to persist for the next five days, but beyond the reach of the anti-cyclone whose southward foray along the western flank will be much more marked and expedited than by its eastern front. Progressive drying up of the northwest and northern reaches of the west coast will be matched only by the scattered to fairly widespread rainfall lashing east India and parts of the north-eastern States. Another remnant of the east India cyclonic circulation is likely to cause rain/thundershowers at many places over west Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next 24 hours. Thundershowers are also likely at a few places over Haryana and Delhi. In the south, rain/thundershowers are likely at a few places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep and isolated over the rest region. In the west, Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, and north Madhya Maharashtra will witness wet conditions. Rain deficit in northwest, northeast; surplus elsewhere Rain surplus builds up; deficit in northwest More Stories on : Climate & Weather | Climate & Weather
