First post office Rly reservation centre in Gujarat

India’s first railway reservation centre at a post office was inaugurated at Ahwa post office in the tribal district of Dang in Gujarat, by the Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr Naranbhai J. Rathwa, on Thursday.

Indian Railways is also set to expand the reach of reserved tickets to the doorsteps of passengers even in remote areas by allowing selling of reserved tickets through post offices, a railway official said here.

A Memorandum of Understating in this regard was signed by officials of the Railway Board and the Department of Posts in New Delhi on July 31. Under this ‘India Post PRS’ scheme, Ahwa is the first such reservation centre to be opened. Ahwa, the headquarters of Dang district is situated at 92 km from Bilimora. It is also the 101st reservation centre of Western Railway.

The building for housing PRS has been provided by the Department of Post free of cost and rent for PRS channel, hardware and communication equipment etc. is being borne by the Railways. The Department of Post will also provide staff for operating PRS terminal. Initially, daily average number of 20-25 PRS tickets are projected to be sold at Ahwa PRS.
