Canadian mining cos keen on joint ventures with India

Large mining companies from Canada are contemplating to form clusters, pooling their respective strengths to tap opportunities in India.

A delegation of at least eight major corporates from Canada, currently travelling in the country to forge business partnerships has expressed keenness to form joint ventures, establish India base or outsource work to Indian companies.

Mr Hemant M. Shah, Mission leader of the Group and also Managing Director of Cubex, a leader in mining equipment, told Business Line here that three companies from Udaipur in Rajasthan had expressed interest in sourcing expertise from the Canadian companies.

To form clusters

Canada has large companies with strengths in exploration, equipment manufacture, safety, environment technology, maintenance etc. “By forming clusters which incorporate these strengths, we can jointly offer better value to Indian customers”, Mr Shah said.

Canadian majors Homeland Uranium, Cogemacoustic, Safety Plus Ltd., Wardrop, Multiutethanes, Lang Michener, Pebble Creek Mining Ltd., Rax Enterprises are some of the companies forming part of the delegation, which is discussing with Indian companies for business opportunities.

The Canada-India business delegation on mining, already held talks with Hindustan Copper, visited R.K. Marble Ltd, the largest marble mining company in Rajasthan.

The delegation would hold meetings with the Aditya Birla Group and Hindustan Zinc in Kolkata as part of the mission.

Ms Bonnie De Moissac, Manger of the Manitoba Trade and Investment, representing the Canadian Government, said Canada can offer Indian mining majors opportunities to explore North America.

In the areas of infrastructure, exploration, engineering services, safety in mining, Canadian companies would look for a joint venture with Indian companies to access business, she said.
