Spices & Condiments Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Spices export registers 26% growth in Apr-Aug
Chilli contributed 28 per cent to the rise in exports followed by pepper 11 per cent. Export of cumin, celery, garlic, vanilla and other seeds declined in volume, value. Our Bureau Kochi, Sept. 28 Spices exports during the current fiscal have shown an upward trend with shipments of a total quantity of 32,605 tonnes, valued Rs 333.71 crore ($81.74 million), in August 2007, against 30,427 tonnes, valued Rs 311.87 crore ($66.99 million), in the same month a year ago. 50% rise in $ termsThe cumulative spices export during April-August 2007 is estimated at 1.87 lakh tonnes valued Rs 1,725.09 crore ($421.16 million) as against 1.49 lt valued Rs 1,290.05 crore ($280.71 million) during the corresponding period last year, according to an official release. Compared to last year, exports have shown an increase of 26 per cent in terms of quantity, and 34 per cent in rupee value and in dollar terms it is 50 per cent. Spice oils & chilliSpice oils and oleoresins, including mint products, contributed 40 per cent of the total export earnings. Chilli contributed 28 per cent followed by pepper 11 per cent, cumin 5 per cent and turmeric 4 per cent. During April-August 2007, the export of pepper, cardamom (large), chilli, coriander, fennel, fenugreek, curry powder, spice oils and oleoresins, mint products, and other spices such as tamarind, asafoetida was higher in terms of both quantity and value as compared to same period of last year. Export of cardamom (small), and nutmeg and mace witnessed increase in value only. However, export of cumin, celery, garlic, vanilla and other seeds declined both in terms of quantity and value as compared to last year. Other spicesPepper shipments during April-August 2007 stood at 12,900 tonnes valued Rs 183.40 crore as against 9,853 tonnes valued Rs 81.99 crore in the same period last year, showing an increase of 31 per cent in quantity and 124 per cent in value terms. During this period, 495 tonnes of cardamom (large) was exported valued at Rs 5.62 crore as against 294 tonnes valued Rs 3.37 crore last year. Exports of chilli were at 88,000 tonnes valued Rs 487.00 crore as against 47,249 tonnes at Rs 225.81 crore during April-August 2006, registering an increase of 86 per cent in quantity and 116 per cent in value terms. The export of coriander seed during April-August 07 stood at 10,650 tonnes valued Rs 39.93 crore as against 7,966 tonnes valued Rs 29.73 crore last year. Curry powder & mintExport of fenugreek during the first five months of the current fiscal was 6,350 tonnes valued Rs 17.23 crore against 3,362 tonnes valued Rs 10.15 crore last year, an increase of 89 per cent in quantity and 70 per cent in value terms. During April-August 2007, the country has exported 4,600 tonnes of curry powder valued Rs 43.43 crore against 3,922 tonnes valued Rs 33.20 crore last year. Export of spice oils and oleoresins has been 2,790 tonnes valued Rs 231.11 crore as against 2,550 tonnes at Rs 215.69 crore last year. The export of mint products increased from 6,554 tonnes valued Rs 391.64 crore in April-August 2006 to 7,100 tonnes at Rs 458.45 crore in April-August 2007. Against the export target of 3.8 lt valued at Rs 3,600 crore ($875million) for the year, the achievement of 1.87 tonnes valued Rs 1,725.09 crore ($421.16 million) up to August 2007 is 49 per cent in quantity and 48 per cent in rupee and dollar terms of value.
