Iron ore loading hit in Keonjhar dt

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Oct. 1 Rake loading of iron ore in Keonjhar district in Orissa has been badly hit by political agitation since Sunday. Those spearheading the agitation are demanding introduction of passenger services in the mine areas having facilities only for loading and movement of freight trains. South Eastern Railway (SER) is particularly affected by the agitation. According to a SER spokesperson, the average daily loading has dropped by more than half. On Sunday, only 22 rakes were loaded as against 50 on normal days. The situation was no better today, he said. Sensing trouble, the trade and others have stopped placing indents for loading. “We’re helpless because passenger services cannot be introduced at will,” said the spokesperson. “First the Commissioner of Railway Safety has to be satisfied if the area is suited for passenger movement,” he said. “Once satisfied, clearance will be given for construction of platforms and other amenities for passengers and all this is a time consuming process.” A spokesperson for East Coast Railway too said that the loading of iron ore has been affected in Nayagarh area.
