Hyderabad, Oct. 1 The State Cabinet today approved the Rs 2 a kg rice scheme aimed at supporting about 1.82 crore poor families in the State.

The Cabinet also decided to hike the pension amount for freedom fighters and to revamp and strengthen the police force with an outlay of Rs 882 crore.

Briefing newspersons after the Cabinet meet, the State Information Minister, Mr Anam Ramnarayan Reddy, said that it is proposed to further strengthen urban infrastructure in cities with population of more than 10 lakhs.

In another important development, the State Government is gearing to register about two lakh acres of land in the name of landless poor during the fourth phase.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, took the decision at a review meeting on the land distribution issue as a part of the implementation of the Koneru Ranga Rao Committee recommendations.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, already about 1.35 lakh acres of vacant land were earmarked and ready for distribution to the landless poor.

Alongside four thousands of acres of assigned lands, clear titles would be accorded to the landless poor during the land distribution programme. The village-wise and district-wise list is in the process of being finalised.

The Chief Minister directed the administration to ensure that adequate land with clear titles was earmarked and ready for distribution among the landless poor.

The Chief Minister reiterated that not an inch of Government, private or endowment land would be allowed to be illegally occupied or encroached upon.
