Cades plans to diversify into composites

To partner with EADS for aerospace design

M. Somasekhar

Hyderabad, Oct. 1

Engineering design services and product company Cades is mulling the option of entering into manufacture of composites, the versatile, light weight materials, with wide applications, especially in aerospace industry.

Though plans are in the initial stages for the Bangalore-based Cades, which has 70 per cent of its revenues coming from aerospace, the diversification would be in line with its long-term objectives.

Cades recently forged a joint venture with the US-based Butler International for jointly marketing engineering services and do outsourced work for the latter in Bangalore. The focus would be on aerospace production, design, modelling and so on. A team of dedicated professionals would be working for them, said Mr S.S. Balakrishnan, Senior Vice-President (Marketing & Business Development).

Major tie-ups

The company has major tie-ups with Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Fokker, EADS and nearly 50 companies focused on engineering design and product development, he told Business Line here.

For EADS, the European major, Cades is creating a team of around 200 professionals trained in aerospace design, to meet the demands for the former’s large operations being created in Bangalore, Mr Balakrishnan said.

EADS has selected Cades as its engineering partner in India for designing components for their aerospace and spacecraft systems needs. The Cades team will be part of the EADS Centre and functional by mid-2008, said Mr Balakrishnan, who was here recently participating in the exhibition organised as part of the 58th International Astronautical Congress.

Airbus is another big client for the company, with over 100 engineers working at various locations of the French major in Europe and India.

Early this year, Cades got Airbus certification, which allows it to directly work on offshore projects with the company in product design and engineering services.

Cades, started in 2001, has grown rapidly to a strength of 500 (85 per cent engineers). The company is planning to increase its strength to 750 by April 2008 and reach 1,000 by April 2009, in view of the huge demands it is receiving from global companies, Mr Balakrishnan said.

In addition, the company also has 25 per cent of its business coming from the automotive segment, where it wants to further expand. The company is working with Mahindra & Mahindra, Volvo, Nissan, among others, to provide automotive solutions, said Mr Anjan Kumar, in-charge of the division.

With two large centres in Bangalore, Cades is trying to venture into other cities, which offer engineering skills set. Hyderabad is definitely one of the promising locations, Mr Balakrishnan said.
