The Hindu Business Line : Sweden keen to share mining expertise

Bangalore, Oct. 1 Sweden is keen to share its expertise in mining environment technology. The country with extensive research and capability for providing technology for sustainable mining with an emphasis on environment aspects is in talks with Indian organisations.

Stating this here on Monday, Mr Stefan Jonsson, Counsellor, Office of Science and Technology in the Embassy of Sweden here, said that this was a new area in which Sweden was keen to collaborate with India. It has already forged linkages with Indian research and scientific organisations for joint efforts in R&D in information, communication technology, and biotechnology, he said.

He said the Institute of Mining Sciences, Sweden, has initiated talks for collaboration with its India counterparts.

Earlier, addressing a press conference to announce a series of activities for the coming Nobel Memorial Week, Mr Jonsson presented Sweden’s first astronaut Mr Christer Fuglesang, who flew on board Space Shuttle Discovery in December last.

He said Fuglesan’s presence and his lecture at the Indian Institute of Science here and later at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, were part of Sweden’s renewed commitment for forging stronger science and technology co-operation.

Mr Jonsson said this year two joint workshops have been planned in Delhi as a follow-up to a memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in 2005 for more co-operation.

The meet would evolve the frameworks for definite joint efforts in R&D in biotechnology and information technology with cost sharing by the two countries. The workshops will be coordinated by the Department of Science and Technology (India) and the Luleå University of Technology, premier research and development centre and university of Sweden.
