The fall in Kerala’s share is attributed to the large-scale coconut cultivation taken up by States such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh where the productivity has also been higher than that of Kerala. Other cropsThe study by the department, updated till 2004-05, has also found that there has been a sharp decline in the area under other crops such as paddy and tapioca.
