Advertising Government - Policy Industry & Economy - Newspapers & Publishing Small, regional papers to get more Govt ads Our Bureau New Delhi, Oct. 2 The Government is planning to move more of its advertisements to papers with smaller circulation. These papers will now see a 50 per cent increase in Government advertisements. Large mainstream papers, which have so far been receiving 60 per cent of the Government’s spend on advertisement, will lose a sixth of that revenue to medium and small papers. Announcing the revision to the Directorate of Audio and Visual Publicity (DAVP) policy, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Mr P.R. Dasmunsi, said the move would encourage small and medium newspapers and regional language newspapers. Papers with medium circulation will take 35 per cent of the pie as compared to an earlier 30 per cent share. And 15 per cent will be reserved for newspapers with small circulations. The Government also announced a waiver of circulation checks for newspapers with circulation numbers below 25,000; the limit earlier stood at 6,000 copies. The Government will also advertise in papers in regional languages such as Bodo, Dogri, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili or Santhali that address relatively smaller populations with circulation numbers as low as 500 copies. The earlier minimum criterion for DAVP advertisements was 2,000 copies. The Minister also acknowledged that the public sector units advertised in mainstream papers as per market rates, higher than that prescribed by DAVP, but ruled out any interference. The policy draft will be up on the official DAVP Web site for suggestions till October 31 and is expected to be finalised by November 30.
