Climate change

The editorial “Feeling the heat” (Business Line, October 3) has come not a day too early. The disastrous consequences for global climate change is one topic that has been hardly realised in a serious enough way by the nations across the world. As the major emitter of greenhouse gases, it is doubtless the responsibility of the US to initiate steps to arrest the trend of uncontrolled atmospheric pollution.

It is necessary that pressure is brought to bear on the US to put in place a voluntary cap on carbon emissions.

Meanwhile a campaign placing emphasis on all countries, small and big, developed and developing, also to limit the emission of greenhouse gases by taking appropriate steps early on is very necessary.

India should take the lead in this regard by moving the UN to pass a resolution urging the countries to take steps to effectively control this potentially dangerous development. On its part, the government should set up a research unit as part of the CSIR to study the problem and work out technological solutions to limit the emission of polluting gases by all sources, including a design for the next generation automobiles to operate on energy sources other than fossil fuel-based gases.
