Chennai to host travel congress from today

Chennai, Oct. 4

The 56th annual Convention and Exhibition of the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), popularly known as the Indian Travel Congress, will be held in Chennai from October 5 to 8.

The theme of this year’s convention is ‘Growth through evolution’, the TAAI President, Mr C.V. Prasad, told reporters here on Thursday. The convention will cover topical issues related to the tourism industry such as people power, eco tourism, tourism and aviation etc., he said.

Chennai was chosen this year because the travel agents association felt that in order to harness the true tourism potential of the country, southern India should get much more focus. The last travel congress was held in Chennai 18 years ago in 1989. “We want to focus on and open up new destinations beyond the golden triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur,” he said.

Brand awareness

“Where ever the annual convention is held business follows. So by holding it in Chennai we hope that business will follow to this part of the country,” he said, adding that it also helps create a brand awareness of the destination because the place of the event is decided by the organisers after doing the necessary research on the facilities available and the potential of that place.

The TAAI is also looking at ways and seeks to formulate strategies for travel agents to play a more significant role at a time when intermediaries are losing relevance in many industries. “In most industries, particularly with the advent of information technology and the Internet buyers and sellers are transacting directly. But in the travel industry travel agents can actually add value and we want to focus on that,” Mr Prasad said.
