‘Higher investment in basic science, research must’

Innovative solutions for meeting education, healthcare needs

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Oct. 4 The Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Mr Kapil Sibal, has underlined the need for a political commitment to scale up the Government investment in basic science and research from 0.5 per cent of the GDP to two per cent if India has to devise innovative solutions for meeting the education and healthcare needs of the people.

Critical activity

Speaking at a function organised by the FICCI with the support of The World Bank and Department of Science and Technology, on Thursday, Mr Sibal said, “There can be no innovative science without the commitment of the public sector in funding basic science and research. The investment flows for this critical activity need to be raised to two per cent of GDP by the end of the 11th Plan.”

Stressing the need for global partnerships in tackling the global challenges of population growth and global warming, Mr Sibal said the natural disasters and new types of virulent diseases that climate change will unleash will have to be countered through effective partnerships in the education and health sectors.

Dr T. Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, stressed the need for adopting ‘’a dual innovation strategy in India as growth and competition essentially segregates society whereas the imperative of inclusive growth aggregates the gains of growth for the betterment of the poor.”
