Fair demand at Coimbatore tea auctions

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Oct 4

The total offerings of tea at the weekly auction held at the Tea Trade Association of Coimbatore amounted to 5.12 lakh kg, with leaf grades accounting for 1.54 lakh kg and the balance of the dust.

There was a fair demand for the orthodox leaf grades with shippers to the CIS countries operating more actively. Internal demand, however, was limited.

Exporters’ support

Few clean well made Nilgiris larger and whole leaf grades quoted firm to dearer, others were irregularly lower by Re 1-Rs 3. Small quantities of orthodox dust were lifted, but on the price front remained barely steady.

Exporters lent fair support for the bolder CTC leaf grades. Few best teas ruled occasionally dearer. Select high priced popular CTC dust grades remained steady.

There were some export enquiries for medium teas, Indco and AVT operated selectively on good liquoring teas. Orthodox high growns ranged between Rs 58 and Rs 77, while the best CTC moved in the Rs 43–50 price band.
