AP to dole out 5 lakh acres of forest land
Our Bureau
Hyderabad, Oct. 4 The Andhra Pradesh Government plans to distribute about five lakh acres of forest land to tribals and non-tribals who have been tilling the lands for decades.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the Tribal Welfare Minister, Mr D.S. Redya Naik, said the pattas could be given to them once the Scheduled Tribes, Other Traditional Forest Dwellers Act became a reality. The State would enact a law on the lines of the Central Act, facilitating the distribution of pattas to eligible farmers.
Listing the measures taken by the Government, he said 12.34 lakh hectares of land in 986 reserve forest blocks needed to be settled according to the norms of Forest Act 1967. “We have granted 18 forest settlement officers for the purpose. The survey is expected to be completed by March next,” he said.
The Minister said an amount of Rs 900 crore had been earmarked for the Remote and Interior Areas Department (RIAD) in the next two years. The focus would be on developing infrastructure in remote villages. The RIAD activities covered 5,662 villages in 18 districts.
