Politics Agri-Biz & Commodities - Sugar States - Andhra Pradesh Black jaggery issue continues to dog AP Our Bureau Hyderabad, Oct. 4 Black jaggery crisis continues to dog Andhra Pradesh, with the BJP and breakaway Telangana Rashtra Samithi opposing the Nafed move to procure the stocks from the State. The AP Markfed, however, argues that the produce is being sold in West Bengal and Assam, quite far away from Andhra Pradesh. Black jaggery, though not fit for human consumption, is much in demand in the local markets. Bootleggers use it for producing illicit liquor. ProtestsCiting protests by prohibition activists and non-governmental organisations, he referred to the purchases made by bootleggers from Assam marketing federation in 2002-03. “They sold about 300 lorry loads in Andhra Pradesh itself,” he said. Mr A. Narendra, former Union Minister and a rebel leader of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, also wrote similar letters to Nafed. Mr Ponnam Prabhakar, Chairman of AP Markfed, wondered why the leaders should oppose while the produce was not being sold in the State.
