AP Markfed maize centres

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Oct. 4 The AP Markfed has opened 365 procurement centres in the 10 maize growing districts, including eight in the Telangana region, this year.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr Ponnam Prabhakar, Chairman of Markfed, said maize was sown in 5.60 lakh hectares this year against 5.03 lakh hectares last year.

The federation had asked the State and Central warehousing corporations to reserve space to house the procured maize. The federation procured 5.63 lakh tonnes (kharif and rabi seasons) last year, involving 480 women self-help groups.

He, however, advised the farmers to dry and clean the produce following the standards set by the Government. “Procurement at the micro level would help them save time and expenditure on transportation,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture has asked Markfed to supply Bengal gram seed for the rabi season.
