India, Sri Lanka sign MoU for apparel articles imports

New Delhi, Oct. 5 India and Sri Lanka on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding to finalise the procedural arrangement for operationalisation of the Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) for import of three million pieces of apparel articles covered under the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade pact.
The MoU was signed by Mr Qaisser Shamim, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, and Mr W.D. Jayasinghe, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Textile Industries, Sri Lanka, an official release issued here said.
Duty-free export
As part of the FTA that came into effect from March 1, 2000, it was decided that Sri Lanka could export to India, in one calendar year, 3 million pieces of apparel articles on a duty-free basis and without any restrictions on entry points and sourcing of fabrics.
Under the MoU, the Textile Quota Board and Department of Commerce, Sri Lanka has been designated as the nodal authority for issue of quota and certificate of origin for the export of apparel articles from Sri Lanka to India and in the case of India, the Textile Committee has been nominated to monitor the TRQ parameters.
