Our Bureau

New Delhi, Oct. 6 India would become 70 per cent self-reliant with indigenous defence acquisitions by 2010 and progress to 90 per cent self-reliance by 2020, said Mr Balasaheb Vikhe Patil, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence and Member of Parliament. He called upon the Ministry of Defence and the industry to work with an open mind for greater self-reliance. He was speaking at a seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry on Friday.

Mr Patil called for greater synergy between the various departments in the Ministry of Defence, the DRDO, defence PSUs and the private players. “With the Brahmos missile, we have proved to the world that we are capable of producing state-of-the-art missiles,” Mr Patil said.

Financial support

He suggested financial support from the Ministry of Defence and the DRDO to help the Indian industry to focus more on R&D. Mr Patil said that in all these developments, the role of the small and medium industry should not be ignored.

The Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, Ministry of Defence, Air Marshal A.V. Vaidya, VM, called for constituting a project monitoring team along with a project management team to check cost overruns.
