Outlook Wyeth Pharma to beef up India presence Our Bureau Hyderabad, Oct. 6 Pharma major Wyeth is in the process of stepping up its presence in India and is in parleys with companies for active pharmaceutical ingredients formulations. The President of Wyeth Research & Development, Dr Robert R. Ruffalo, said: “Wyeth has adopted a different model when it comes to R&D. We already have about 1,100 people in India through various partnerships and these work on independent projects and complement over 6,000 people working on R&D.” “We continue to grow and consolidate R&D work in India and see India as a very important element of the company’s research work,” he said. Addressing newspersons after announcing Wyeth Chemistry Centre in Hyderabad, Dr Ruffalo said: “Wyeth has a large discovery portfolio resulting in a growing need for strong medical chemistry. By working with partners, we are able to tap into the huge chemistry talent pool in India and work globally on a 24- hour basis. Partnership with GVK Bio significantly enhances research capability and complements in-house synthetic chemistry.” Outsourcing“Outsourcing has emerged as a strong opportunity for pharma companies and unlike other companies which have outsourced, we have managed to do it through partnership and actually own these centres,” he said. Asked about Wyeth plans for new drugs, Dr Ruffalo said: “We have a large and healthy pipeline and continue to invest in new areas. However, there continues to be some concerns about regulatory issues and the time taken for clearance of drugs by the FDA.” More Stories on : Outlook | Pharmaceuticals
