Highway 215 in bad shape

Bad condition of the NH-215.

The 270-km long National Highway 215, connecting Keonjhar, a major iron ore belt in Orissa, with Panikuili on the National Highway 5 that connects Kolkata with Chennai, is in a terrible shape, so much so that an iron ore carrying truck can proceed on this road only at an average speed of 4 to 5 km per hour. No wonder there is a huge congestion on the road. As a result fewer iron ore trucks than before are arriving at Paradip port. In normal times, on an average, 1,000 iron trucks arrive at the port every day. It was much less in September and the situation remains unchanged so far in the current month. There is a proposal for double-laning of the NH 215 at an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore to facilitate road movement and accordingly a detailed project report too has been prepared. As the situation stands, the authorities concerned are struggling with even minimum repair work. Four-laning, it seems, is far off.
