Shipping Tracking system for ships The introduction of a compulsory long-range identification and tracking system (LRIT) for ships above 300 tonnes is the focus of the UN International Maritime Organisation’s safety meeting being held in Copenhagen, according to Shipping Gazette. Other measures include the adoption of proposed amendments to SOLAS (Safety of Life At Sea) Convention relating to the provision of mobile satellite communication services with Global Maritime Distress & Safety System and development of standards of security for container in ships. The Maritime Safety Committee will take decisions to implement LRIT. The plan is to make the system operational with transmission from ships beginning from January 2009. Meanwhile, the US Department of Homeland security has published a proposed rule in the Federal Register, requiring certain ships to report identifying their positions electronically.
