Nimsme to open branches in South

M. Somasekhar

Hyderabad, Oct. 8 The Hyderabad-based National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Nimsme) is expanding to other southern cities with new branches during 2007-08.

Chennai, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram would be the destinations.

The idea is to work closely with these State Governments, in promoting the development of the SME and tiny industries.

Each of these new branches will have 8-10 professionals and will be backed by the expertise of the Nimsme in Hyderabad, which is over 40 years old, according to Mr Chukka Kondaiah, Principal Director of the national institute, under the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Initially, these branches would focus on cluster development, micro financing, employment generating industry, and emphasis on developing entrepreneurship among women and SC/ST groups, he told Business Line.

Tsunami relief

The Nimsme is already involved in providing consultancy and expertise to the ILO (International Labour Organisation) funded projects to help the tsunami-affected in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The ILO is emphasising on three routes – SYB (start your own business); EYB (expand your own business); and GYB (grow your own business) – to help the 2004 tsunami-affected to stand up on their feet and improve the lot of their families, Mr Kondaiah said.

On the international front, the focus has been on Africa. The Nimsme has recently conducted a survey for the Republic of Zambia for promoting SMEs there.
