Mergers & Acquisitions Kavveri Telecom enters Europe thru Sigma buy
Our Bureau Bangalore, Oct. 9 Bangalore-based Kavveri Telecom has sailed into European shores with the acquisition of virtual assets of Sigma Wireless, a PCTEL division. PCTEL is a NASDAQ-listed, US-based telecom firm. The BSE-listed firm purchased the American company Til-Tek for $2.5 million and Canadian filter maker DCI for CAD$2 million earlier this year. The size of the Sigma deal was undisclosed. Technology, IPR and patents from Sigma Wireless will aid Kavveri in serving its existing customers (operators) in the US. “The market opportunity in the US can be further tapped using the new technology we have obtained. We will also be able to play in markets that are ahead in terms of networks – 3G and HSDPA networks,” said Mr Shivkumar Reddy, Managing Director, Kavveri Telecom Products. The acquisition will also bring in European clients such as O2, Vodafone and H3. The company has hired two employees of the erstwhile Sigma Wireless for techno-commercial requirements. Seven patents were acquired on technology such as remote management of antenna from the network operations centre over the Internet, 3G and HSDPA antennae and tower-mounted amplifiers. Tilting the antenna on a base station to reduce or increase its range without climbing the tower will save the operator $2,000 per change. The patents have boosted Kavveri’s technology omnibus, said Ms C. Uma Reddy, Director (Operations), Kavveri Telecom Products. Cost arbitrageThe company offers its domestic clients a cost arbitrage. Antennae sold in India are priced at Rs 13,000 compared with $1,600 charged for American clients. By 2010, there will be half-a-million base station antennae in India, most of which are supplied by the firm. More Stories on : Mergers & Acquisitions | Overseas Investments | Telecommunications
