Automobile Components Apex panel for auto mission plan likely soon Priyanka Vyas New Delhi, Oct. 10The Government is likely to finalise an expert committee in two weeks constituting members from the finance, commerce, heavy industries, and members of the Development Council for Automobile and Allied Industry to monitor the developments and targets of the Automotive Mission Plan 2006-2016 (AMP). The Minister for Heavy Industries, Mr Santosh Mohan Dev, had said during the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Association (SIAM) annual convention in September that the Government was in the process of finalising an apex committee without specifying any timeframe. Official sources told Business line, “We are expecting to finalise the committee to monitor the AMP in the next two weeks. Once the committee is formed, the finer details to implement various targets as decided by the Plan would be started.” They declined to elaborate further. Eye on IndiaThis comes at a time when India plans to attract more investments as global players have set their eyes not only on the domestic market but also on exports. Companies like Maruti Suzuki India and Hyundai Motors India Ltd have already announced their investments and expansion plans on this front. While Toyota plans to make India a base for its small car, Volkswagen is eyeing the market. As per the AMP, the Government is looking to address the holistic aspects challenging the growth of the auto industry including availability of talent, quality, price competitiveness, technology competitiveness as well as regulatory issues to make the country’s auto industry at par with global standards. Export targetIndia expects to export 70 billion components by 2016 and projects the share of the automobile industry at 10-11 per cent of the country’s GDP.
