Xerox technology to fight forgery

Adith Charlie

Recently in Grenoble, France

Oct. 10 In a move to thwart document counterfeiting, document solutions provider Xerox Corporation has developed a new technology which allows customers to print pages with variable text visible only under infrared light.

Christened InfraredMark, the speciality imaging font is printed with ordinary toner and can be produced on standard Xerox digital systems using regular paper. If a fraudster tries to alter or copy the document with the InfraredMark font, the text becomes illegible making the distortion apparent under infrared light.

The InfraredMark technology complements Xerox’s existing technologies including MicroText, which prints text smaller than 1 point size; ‘Glossmark text’, which prints text visible when the paper is tilted. Another technology, the ‘FluorescentMark’ prints text visible only under ultraviolet light, while ‘Correlation Mark’ text prints text visible only when a “key” overlay is superimposed. These technologies can be used in different combinations to authenticate tickets, coupons, certificates, licence and other identification papers that are generally targeted by forgerers, according to Mr Raja Bala, principal scientist at Xerox’s Webster research centre in New York, and a co-inventor of the process.
