More sops for urban renewal

New Delhi, Oct. 10
The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, said that
the Government is considering offering further
incentives to States and cities that implement reforms on
a faster track under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban
Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
Speaking at a national
conference on JNNURM, Dr Singh urged the States and
local Governments to advance the timelines for
implementation of reforms so that the Mission's
objectives were met within the specified time. Stating
that the sum of Rs 50,000 crore provided by the
Government was not adequate for meeting the
infrastructure investment needs of JNNURM cities and
towns, the Prime Minister pointed out that States must
leverage the funds and raise more from the market. To do
so, the quality of projects and the fiscal health of urban
local bodies must be improved, he added.
