Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather Stage set for N-E monsoon
Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 10 The anti-cyclonic circulation has become more marked over northwest India and broadened its reach to drive out the southwest monsoon from entire east Uttar Pradesh, some parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, north Chhattisgarh and most parts of Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday. Strengthening of associated northwesterlies has impacted the previous day’s low-pressure area over Bangladesh, which has since become less marked. But a remnant upper air cyclonic circulation still hovers in the region, and is capable of generating isolated heavy to very heavy falls over the contiguous Indian northeast at least for another day. Fairly widespread rainfall is likely over West Bengal and Sikkim, an update from India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. CYCLONIC CIRCULATIONMeanwhile, in the south, the upper air cyclonic circulation over the east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea off the Kerala-Karnataka coasts persisted, according to a weather update by the Ohio State University. Significantly, it said that a cyclonic circulation has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the south Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coasts. A couple of other international models also seemed to agree with this observation. A source in the Government, however, said that broad contours of a developing trough were becoming increasingly clear in the southwest Bay. Winds are expected to change from being east-northeasterlies to northeasterlies. Extreme southern peninsula, including southern Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Sri Lanka will get the first showers of the season over the next few days. This is expected to happen with the anticyclone probing further deep towards the south and activating the northeasterly flows along the southeast coast. nataka and Rayalaseema.
