Room for recruits: Cement shortage causes construction delay

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Oct. 11 Cement and labour shortage has hit Infosys’ intake of campus recruits during the September quarter as the company couldn’t complete the construction of accommodation facility on time. As a result, the company was forced to defer the intake of around 2,500 campus recruits, who were supposed to join the induction programme at Mysore. The company will not be able to complete the construction of residential accommodation of 7,500 rooms for its recruits on time this year, said Mr T.V. Mohandas Pai, Head of HR at Infosys. Cement prices have soared from Rs 200 to Rs 270 a bag and there is a severe shortage, he said.

As of September, 2007, Infosys had a built up area of over 13 million sq feet capable of accommodating 65,863 seats. Another 9.5 million sq feet with some 26,627 seats is under construction across its facilities in Bangalore, Mysore, Pune, Chennai, Chandigarh, Bhubaneshwar, Mangalore and Thiruvananthapuram. The company is in the process of adding 12,600 seats in Pune, 5,000 seats in Chennai, 3,485 seats in Mangalore, 2,300 seats in Bangalore among others.
