Rice export

The Centre’s decision to ban exports of non-basmati rice is ill-advised. Such sudden decisions not only put exporters in a difficult situation but also lead to a loss of face for India in the global market. And it would be difficult to regain the market. The concern of exporters in these areas and especially the “3 lakh tonnes lying in ports” (Business Line, October 11) need to be addressed.

The editorial “Farm policy flurries” (Business Line, October 11) is a timely call for a review of the decision to allow superfine varieties for export, if need be with a minimum export price condition. It is also pointed out that the ban would deny paddy growers higher market prices. At a time exports are already hit by the rising rupee, why take away what is easier at hand?
